(PHOTOS/VIDEO) Pussy Riot: Jailed Russian Girl Group Needs Your Help!

Post Type

Pussy Riot is the name of an outspoken Russian girl group who have been jailed by President Putin because of a controversial music video they shot.  Check out the shocking details, photos, video, and how you can help in our featured guest post…

There is nothing more uncertain and scary than being a vocal dissident in Russia these days, just ask Pussy Riot, known for its intolerance of dissent and homosexuality among other things, President Putin is clamping down on all forms of dissent, possibly due to paranoia. Why is any of this of interest to you? Well firstly, three cute and politically active women were thrown in jail and can face up to 7 years behind bars for performing an anti-President Putin punk styled prayer in Moscow’s main cathedral, the Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

Many western artists including Sting, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Daft Punk have all spoken out on this case. The three women; Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, were arrested and incarcerated in late February of this year and could face up to seven years in jail if they are convicted of the charge of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility. These are quite lofty charges for the women who performed with masks on during a mass but had nothing violent in their impromptu performance…unless asking the Virgin Mary to get Vladimir Putin out of power is considered blasphemous.

Pussy Riot’s motives for the punk prayer were purely political and the stunt was designed to highlight the tight relationship between the dominant Russian Orthodox Church and the former KGB officer. It’s alleged that Vladimir Putin campaign to return to the Russian presidency for yet another term in this past March election was backed by the leader of the church, Patriarch Kirill.

Considering Russia is a communist country; the church has surprisingly enjoyed a huge revival since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, and is seeking a stronger influence on secular life. The church deemed the performance to be part of a larger campaign by “anti-Russian forces” to destabilize and demonize Putin’s regime. All the women want is for world to see what Putin is doing and how he is silencing those voices.
To give you readers a brief overview of the band, Pussy Riot exploded onto the Russian music scene this past winter with angry lyrics and surprise flashband (flashmob style) performances, including a very memorable one on Red Square right outside the Kremlin. This performance went viral on the Internet. The members of Pussy Riot see themselves as part of the avant-garde movement of a completely disenchanted generation looking for inventive ways to show its utter frustration with Vladimir Putin’s 12-year dominance of Russian politics.

What makes this case all the more harrowing is that Putin recently signed a law ratifying stricter punishment for defamation. This decree follows recent laws that tighten the controls on foreign-funded rights groups and sharply raises fines for violations of public order during street rallies. Human rights group Amnesty International is quoted as saying that Pussy Riot “must be released immediately” and that the jail terms they face if convicted of their crimes are “wildly out of all proportion.”

Now for all the times you read about a crime and couldn’t figure out how to help out, do something moral and sign the petition, help create more of an awareness and fight the power.  Here is a video (with English subtitles) of the event that got them arrested:
