MailOnline — The 48-year-old actress revealed how she and husband Peter Hermann took in baby Andrew just two days after getting a call from her lawyer. It came just six months after she adopted daughter Amaya – now a year old – and saw their brood increase to three overnight – the couple also have a biological son August, aged five.

Hargitay, who recently opened up about a former adoption that fell through years ago, welled up as she talked about the her emotional rollercoaster.

Recalling how Andrew’s adoption came out of the blue, she said: ‘It was one of those things that we were not expecting at all and my husband and looked at each other and have never have been more sure about anything.’

Andrew, now nine months old, was just two months old when Mariska and Peter adopted him in October.

The Law And Order: SVU star became tearful as she said: ‘This has been a year of blessings.’ Mariska told this month’s Good house keeping magazine how she was left devastated when a girls she and her husband adopted fell through.

She had only been at home with them for two days when they got a shocking phone call.

‘The long and short of it: The birth mother changed her mind,’ Hargitay confessed to the magazine. ‘It was nothing short of devastating. But… this is what I’ve come to understand about life: It was probably the greatest, happiest ending. I mean, it was so painful for us, but it was deeply joyful and deeply right for her.’

It was after this that the couple went on to adopt Amaya and Andrew. Hargitay, who has been married to Peter since 2004, recently revealed that Andrew and Amaya have already started bonding. She told People magazine: ‘They’ll lie in the crib together, and she’ll hold his hand and put her arm around him. She’s already so protective of him.
