The youngest daughter of murdered human rights activist Malcolm X has been jailed for failing to pay back $55,000 she stole from an elderly New York woman. A court in Queens heard that Malikah Shabazz, 46, had failed to make any of the monthly $1,229 repayments she had agreed as part of a plea deal earlier this year.

In addition, Shabazz had ignored a court order requiring her to live in New York while she served a five-year probation sentence. The court heard she had been living in St Albans, Vermont.

Shabazz was ordered to repay the $55,000 over 50 months, or risk a jail term of up to seven years.

Prosecutors in New York say Shabazz opened credit cards in the name of 70-year-old Queens resident Khaula Bakr, whose late husband was one of Malcolm X’s bodyguards. He was present when the black leader was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem in 1965.

According to authorities, Shabazz told Mrs Makr she needed her personal information for paperwork involving a child care matter and then used it to open the accounts.

District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement:

‘The defendant, who preyed upon the trusting nature of a once close family friend, has admitted her guilt in committing a serious felony offense and will be ordered to make her victims financially whole.’
